Upcoming AU Events Attract Community Interest, Involvement
Truth, Faith, and Service Speaker Scott Russell Sanders
Writer and conservationist Scott Russell Sanders will be speaking in Nicholson Library on the campus of Anderson University on Friday, September 8, at 7 PM as part of the Truth, Faith, and Service speaker series. The event is free and open to the public.
Sanders’ work examines the human place in nature, the pursuit of social justice, the relationship between culture and geography, and the search for a spiritual path. He has written more than twenty books exploring these topics, and retired in 2009 as distinguished professor of English after thirty-eight years at Indiana University.
Among his books are novels, collections of stories, and works of personal nonfiction. His recent books include A Private History of Awe, a coming-of-age memoir, love story, and spiritual testament; and A Conservationist Manifesto, his vision of a shift from a culture of consumption to a culture of caretaking. His latest book is the novel Divine Animal, a story of healing. His forthcoming books include Dancing in Dreamtime: Stories and a new edition of Stone Country.
Sanders has received numerous writing and humanitarian awards on the state, regional, and national levels, including election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He and his wife Ruth, a biochemist, have reared two children in their hometown of Bloomington, Indiana.
The Truth, Faith, and Service speaker series is designed to highlight ideas found in the official seal of Anderson University—Truth (Veritas), Faith (Fidelitas), and Service (Utilitas). The speaker series is a part of the yearlong centennial celebration for Anderson University. Sanders’ talk is the final engagement in the series.
Children’s Literature Festival
Anderson University’s Nicholson Library is hosting the eighth annual Elizabeth York Children’s Literature Festival on Saturday, September 23. The event is from 8:30 AM to 4 PM and is free to the public. A lunch will be available for $10 per person. This year’s festival will feature authors John David Anderson, Jeff Stone, and Louise Borden, along with author/illustrator Loren Long.
