Anderson, Indiana, will be home yet again to a convention of the Church of God this summer. The Hispanic Council (Concilio Hispano) scheduled their national gathering this year for July 25–27 in a city known for Church of God heritage on the campus of Anderson University. Not only is excitement building for the location and the chance to meet again as a family so rich in culture and heritage, but also for the opportunity to celebrate a major ministry milestone. The 70th anniversary of the Hispanic Council of the Church of God means leadership is holding little back when it comes to planning and preparing a celebration for which the whole Movement can rejoice.

Every year Jesus people who more often than not worship the Lord together across the United States in the language of Spanish look forward to the annual convention of the Hispanic Council. Rotating locations regularly, the event took place at Mid-America Christian University last year; this year, however, Anderson University is the host site and, in partnership with the School of Theology and Christian Ministry—with Professor Rev. Ramón Rivera offering tremendous help and leadership—the convention is expected to be especially strong in theological and inspirational content. Throughout the three-day event, activities are being planned for the whole family, not just pastors and ministry leaders.

According to Marcos Garcia, general director of the Hispanic Council, there’s something uniquely special about coming back to central Indiana for such a historic occasion. “Anderson represents a core of our Movement, and what better place to celebrate our 70th anniversary,” he notes. “It invites us to examine, with deep reflection, our roots—where we come from, our development up to the present, what we have achieved and, above all, to dream about the future of the Hispanic work and the expansion of the kingdom of heaven in the United States.”

The theme “Unbreakable” rises to the fore of sessions, breakouts, and all activities of this year’s event, based on the passage of Scripture, 1 Corinthians 4:7–8. Marcos, alongside Johnny León, who coordinates communication for the Concilio, offered these reflections: “It reminds us of what we have experienced in the Lord. He is the Unbreakable One. Therefore, he is our greatest support in our brokenness. In God, we can take inventory of our struggles and weaknesses, but we remember and affirm the conviction that God has helped us up to this point.”

The main speaker for the event is Donald Franz (Oklahoma), but numerous teachers and leaders of workshops and breakout seminars also add interest and insight to the lineup: Ramón Rivera, Gilberto Lozano, Israel Munguia, Joseph Cookston (CARE), Ercides Estrada, and Marcos García. Additionally, Camilo Rebolledo and Johnny León will be over the youth activities and Esteban Rodriguez will offer a workshop specifically tailored to pastor’s kids (PKs). Reminiscent of Kid’s Place of yesteryear, a Treasure Hunt VBS will find its setting at Park Place Church of God. Victory Church Band from Atlanta, Georgia, will lead worship.

“Our prayer,” Marcos and Johnny express in agreement, “is that our eyes be opened and we capture the powerful and constant movement of God—that we become part of God’s movement for this time, part of this story. Our prayer is that our ministries be inspired to reach out and disciple those who feel far from God.”
