Trafficklight: The Fight Against Stealing Freedom for Profit
“Human trafficking is the business of stealing freedom for profit. It is a multi-billion-dollar criminal industry that denies freedom to 24.9 million people around the world” (The Polaris Project).
But Jesus says, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10).
What is my role in helping the nearly 25 million people who are victims of forced labor or commercial sex? What is our role as ambassadors of Christ? How do we give life in places where the thief has come to steal?
In the past several years, the Church of God Trafficklight project has sought to answer this question in three ways:
- Awareness—how do we help our churches and communities understand the problem and have a realistic picture of what trafficking is and is not?
- Experience—how do we connect the church with local and global organizations so that they can form partnerships that make a meaningful difference?
- Resources—how can we come together to provide resources to Spirit-led and effective ministries who have been called and trained to work on the front lines of this fight?
Freedom Sunday has been a way that many local churches have stepped into all three. It’s an opportunity to help the local congregation understand the need identify local and global partners, and give of ourselves in bringing life.
In 2019, we have promoted two Freedom Sunday dates, March 10 and September 22. If you hosted a Freedom Sunday in March, we would love to hear how the day went! If you are planning a Freedom Sunday for September 22, will you let us know? We would love to share your experiences with the church at-large. Reach out to me at ABrandon@chog.org so we can talk!
Maybe neither of those dates work for your congregational calendar. There is nothing special about those dates other than the opportunity to join with churches across the continent. So, plan a day that works for your church! Find an organization in your community doing the hard work of reclamation and love. Talk with Global Strategy about our global partners who are building community centers and working with families in prevention. Host a Children of Promise Sunday. Pick a day. Any day. You can give life today.
