Pastors in the Church of God know how instrumental Servant Solutions has been to their ministry. From pensions to financial planning to ministerial tax information and investments, the staff have always been about “serving those who serve.” Only one, however, has been faithful to this task for forty-one years. Doug Hamlin has given oversight to the accounting process and daily operations of Servant Solutions—formerly the Board of Pensions—since 1975. For exemplary servant leadership over a remarkable career of ministry to ministers, the retiring Doug Hamlin was honored with a ceremony at Madison Park Church of God on the concluding evening of the three-day Anderson Regional Convention and CHOG Table experience.

In the evening on Thursday, June 23, seventy people dined and fellowshipped together in the Commons at Madison Park to honor Doug Hamlin. Guests included board members, trustees, and longtime friends of Servant Solutions. Lani Czarniecki of Indiana Governor Mike Pence’s office was also on hand to present Doug with the Sagamore of the Wabash Award. Only the governor’s office can issue the prestigious award, which is conferred upon men and women who have been identified as offering distinguished service to community and state.

Doug may not have ever imagined serving one organization for so long, but it was where God called him to serve and stay. “During my employment interview,” Doug explains, “I recall responding to a question about how I saw myself in the role in five years—not forty! But as employment became mission…it was my opportunity in life to ‘do right, do well.’”

Dealing with finances is never easy, and working with minister’s finances doesn’t make it easier. An uncertain market and changes in laws and regulations have a real effect on the scope of what Servant Solutions does for the Church of God. “In service of that mission, there have been many unwanted challenges, whether brought about by intrusive governmental regulations, volatile investment markets, technology, or from some other quarter. In the midst of those, I have found my Lord to be a “very present help in time of trouble.” It is Doug’s hope that others can be blessed with such meaningful work as he has enjoyed for more than four decades.

Kerry Robinson, Doug’s pastor for the last twenty years at East Side Church of God, commends the servant of God for his longevity in lay ministry, but also for his character. “He and his wife Dottie are two of God’s faithful servants,” Kerry explains. “Their integrity is above reproach. Their love of Jesus and his church is beyond question. Their servant hearts are an inspiration. Doug’s faithful service for forty years at Servant Solutions has never been about a professional job. It has always been a response to God’s call on his life to serve those who serve the church. God has used Doug’s efforts to bless multiple generations of ministry leaders. It is fitting that we celebrate his work, his life, and his impact.”
