Stories from pastors are testifying to the impact of the initiative known as CARE (Clergy Advocacy and Resource Effort). One by one, pastors are gaining personal financial freedom. Church boards are discovering best practices in putting together pastor compensation packages that benefit both the pastor and the church.

At present, more than eighty-five pastors and their congregations are involved in different phases of CARE. From financial coaching to educational debt relief, from retirement assistance to compensation package restructuring, the goal is for pastors in the Church of God to have a healthy and sustained ministry with less financial stress. Financial stress has been found to be the number-one deterrent in the United States affecting the well-being of pastors.*

Check out these stories of two Church of God pastors:

  2. “…[I] was transitioning to a lead pastor position and the board at my new church was stuck in a 30–40 year tradition of giving the pastor a lump sum compensation with no awareness of the [negative] implications of this action…CARE provided [me] with language to go to the board to explain…The Pastoral Compensation Manual was a big help…The financial mountain was massive, and it was a burden to me and my family. Being a young pastor working with a board of older lay leaders was very awkward. But with the help of CARE, the board has changed its policies and has now provided both retirement and education debt reduction commitments, in spite of [the] challenging financial situation at church.”

The Church of God has great pastors. Let’s keep it that way!
