It Takes a Team: An Interview with CHOG Ministries’ Roz Hency
By Carl Stagner
How much do you know about what goes on inside the office at Church of God Ministries? Who conducts the necessary office work so others may travel the world with the hope of Christ? It’s the behind-the-scenes work that enables Church of God Ministries to carry out the work of our Lord. When you support the unrestricted portion of the World Ministries Budget, you support our missionaries, our projects at home and abroad, and so much more. In the following interview, get to know one of the faces behind the scenes. Her name is Roz Hency, and your support of the “basic budget” makes her vital ministry possible.
What is your role at Church of God Ministries, and how does it support the overall mission?
My role at Church of God Ministries is to assist Art Clawson in finding financial resources to support the ongoing ministries of the Church of God. I am a connecting point for individuals and churches interested in sharing their resources to further the ministries of the Church of God.
How were you introduced to the Church of God, and what do you appreciate most about the movement?
I was introduced to the Church of God as a teenager, and it was at Emlenton, Whitehall Youth Camp, under David Shultz, that I accepted Christ. I was invited to attend Oakland Church of God in Distant, Pennsylvania, with friends, and I became involved in the youth and music ministry of the church. I attended Anderson University after graduating from high school and, while a student, met my future husband, Jeff Hency. He was my associate pastor at the time. His family represented five generations of pastors in the Church of God, so I married into a great Church of God heritage. The Hencys are also a musical family, and my love for music aligns with what I appreciate most about the Church of God movement—it represents a singing church.
What do you value most about working for Church of God Ministries?
It has given me the opportunity to live out my personal calling to serve others. I enjoy building relationships and connecting with people from all over the world. I really love those moments when I get to put a face to the voice I hear over the phone, or get to hug someone I only knew through e-mail. I love serving Christ by serving people.
When you’re not at the office, how do you like to spend your time?
I am an Indiana state high school official, licensed in basketball and volleyball. I enjoy being a positive influence to young athletes in nearby communities. I enjoy crafts and spending time with my family, especially my granddaughter.
What are one or two of your favorite worship songs or hymns? What is one of your favorite passages of Scripture?
One of my favorite older gospel songs is “Joy Unspeakable,” and I enjoy listening to Mandisa. One of my favorite passages of Scripture is Deuteronomy 31:6—“Be strong, courageous, and firm; fear not nor be in terror before them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you; He will not fail you or forsake you” (AMPC). I have carried this verse with me since my teens. Another favorite verse Jeremiah 29:11, where God promises good things for our future. It is a verse of hope.
Roz and her husband Jeff reside in Anderson, Indiana, with their dog Bear.
