How much do you know about what goes on inside the office at Church of God Ministries? Who conducts the necessary office work so others may travel the world with the hope of Christ? It’s the behind-the-scenes work that enables Church of God Ministries to carry out the work of our Lord. When you support the unrestricted portion of the World Ministries Budget, you support our missionaries, our projects at home and abroad, and so much more. In the following interview, get to know one of the faces behind the scenes. Her name is Elizabeth Miller, and your support of the “basic budget” makes her vital ministry possible.

What is your role at Church of God Ministries, and how does it support the overall mission?

I am the executive assistant to Ben Shular, the chief international officer and director of Global Strategy. I also assist Stephen Lewis, the associate director of Global Strategy. My job is to keep Ben and Stephen on track, which means that I am kind of a jack-of-all-trades. I do everything from scheduling their meetings, arranging travel, setting up dinners, balancing company credit cards, to managing the missionary e-mail addresses. I see my job as taking care of the small things, so that they can spend their time taking care of the big things.

What do you value most about working for a Christian organization?

There are a number of things that I value about working for a Christian organization, but the primary one is that I believe that my work is making a difference in the world. I believe that in just about any job you can serve God if you do your work with diligence, but in this position I can see the difference that my work makes in the world. I love that. Also, I love that we have prayer group in the morning and that we pray for each other daily. My coworkers truly are like family.

How has your work with Global Strategy, in particular, been a blessing to you?

One of my favorite job perks is that I get to hear about all of the exciting things that God is doing around the world. When missionaries come in from the field and sit down to debrief, I get to hear about how they are impacting their corner of the globe. And when Ben and Stephen sit down with missions pastors, I get to hear about how God is working with their hearts and the hearts of their congregations. Our mission statement is “connecting local passion in strategic global partnership” and I get to see this happening and be a part of the connection. There was a time when I wanted to be a missionary myself, but I have never received that calling. Yet, God has confirmed several times that I am right where he wants me at this stage of my life, and that is a huge blessing.

How were you introduced to the Church of God? What do you appreciate most about it?

I discovered the Church of God movement when I applied for a job here at Church of God Ministries. I did grow up in a Christian home, but I was unfamiliar with the movement. I did not get the first position that I applied to, but having read the core beliefs of the movement during a time in my life while my husband and I were looking for a new church, we decided to look at a Church of God. Shortly after we began attending Madison Park Church of God, the office contacted me about another position that they thought might fit me well. I love that the movement is founded on sound doctrine and follows scriptural principles.

How do you spend your time when you’re not at work?

When I’m not at work, I’m usually hanging out with my husband and our three kids. I don’t have a lot of extra time for hobbies, but when the kids are asleep and the house is quiet, sometimes I paint. When it’s warm, we love taking the kids out to the park or the zoo, but during the cold months we mostly stick to inside activities aside from, of course, the occasional romp around in the snow.

Elizabeth and her husband Josh reside in Anderson, Indiana, with their three children, Eli, four; Isaac, two; and Hannah, one.
