Explore Hip-Hop Culture in Lecture Series at Warner Pacific
The 2nd Annual Diversity Lecture Series at Warner Pacific College welcomes prominent authors and scholars, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, Dr. Christopher Emdin, and Rahiel Tesfamariam as part of a compelling, three-part event titled, “It’s Bigger Than Hip-Hop: Community, Education, and Spirituality” at McGuire Auditorium on the College’s Mt. Tabor campus.

Dr. Emdin will deliver, “Hip-Hop’s Influence on Education”

Ms. Tesfamariam will deliver, “Hip-Hop’s Influence on Spirituality”
All lectures are free and open to the public.
These lectures serve as the centerpiece of the Annual Diversity Lecture Series, featuring thoughtful discussion and critical analysis on a broad range of topics. Rooted in the mission and core themes of Warner Pacific College, the Office of Diversity provides the resources and programs necessary for developing and supporting a richly diverse campus, while also reaching out to honor voices throughout the greater Portland community.
“I am excited to welcome some of America’s most well respected thought-leaders and activists to Warner Pacific as we discuss the intersections of hip-hop, culture, education, and spirituality,” said Dr. Daymond Glenn, Vice President for Community Life and Chief Diversity Officer at Warner Pacific College. “Through collaborations such as these, we believe that our students and neighbors will gain a deeper knowledge of this important cultural touchstone and its impact on our past, present, and future.”
Dr. Marc Lamont Hill is an Associate Professor of Education at Teachers College, Columbia University; he also holds an affiliated faculty appointment in African American Studies at the Institute for Research in African American Studies at Columbia University. Dr. Hill holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the intersections of culture, politics, and education.
Dr. Christopher Emdin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Technology at Teachers College, Columbia University; where he also serves as Director of Science Education at the Center for Health Equity and Urban Science Education. He is currently a Caperton Fellow and Hip-Hop Archive Fellow at the WEB DuBois Institute at Harvard University. Dr. Emdin holds a Ph.D. in Urban Education with a concentration in Mathematics, Science, and Technology.
Rahiel Tesfamariam is a writer, social activist, public theologian, and social commentator. She is the Founder/Editorial Director of Urban Cusp, a cutting-edge online lifestyle magazine highlighting progressive urban culture, faith, social change, and global awareness; she is also a columnist and blogger for The Washington Post and The Root DC. Rahiel received her B.A. in American Studies from Stanford University and M.Div. from Yale University.
