Cookies and Creativity: Christ’s Birthday Observance Leaves Lasting Impact
By Rachel Addison
Every year my church, Bowen First Church of God in Bowen, Kentucky, participates in Christ’s Birthday Observance (CBO). Our Christian Women Connection group prayerfully sets goals, but unfortunately, we fall short year after year. We felt CBO was worth investing in, and that we needed to do more to help support all the wonderful things this unique offering helps to fund.
This time, we invested in the CBO devotionals, and heavily promoted the offering the entire season of Advent. We read the devotionals every day, and our pastor, Mike Hicks, posted his thoughts and insights on social media encouraging us to keep reading, and dive in deeper. Our Sunday School children even wanted to help! They met one Saturday morning and baked cookies to sell after church the next day.
Our CBO offering was taken during our Christmas Eve service. Before the offering was raised, we completed Advent, then Pastor Mike shared his testimony of how the CBO offering had directly impacted his life by funding a scholarship he received for seminary. Everyone in the congregation then came forward with their offerings. The Sunday School children came first to place their cookie fundraising money in the manger to signify this offering is not simply going to an organization, but is an offering to Jesus.
Our CBO offering was three times over our goal! We were thrilled to see what a significant difference it made in our offering by making a few little changes in promoting Christ’s Birthday Observance. I am so proud of my Christian Women Connection group and our church!
We are thankful for the encouraging words. I have been working with our local executive board and specifically our CWC Kentucky state president, Patsy Daugherty, to promote CWC and encourage all ladies to really work to make CWC just as Nora Hunter would want. Kentucky CWC has some great things in store!
