COACHING FOR IMPACT
“A coach is someone who tells you what you don’t want to hear, who has you see what you don’t want to see, so you can be who you have always known you could be.” —Tom Landry
Do you have a coach or mentor? Have you ever been asked that question, or heard someone talk about having a coach or mentor? What is the big deal anyway? Isn’t a coach something you had in little league or in your high school musical? There is clear evidence that having mentors and coaches in our lives helps us move forward in areas of life where we would otherwise have stayed stagnant—or fallen off a cliff.
Why should you have a mentor or coach? First, it is modeled often in the Bible. Moses and Joshua, Paul and Timothy, Jesus and his disciples, Ruth and Naomi, and the list goes on. We need others in our lives to help us stay on track and sharpen us. Second, it keeps us moving forward. Truth-tellers refuse to let us stay stagnant or rationalize actions or attitudes that could derail us. A study a few years ago interviewed leaders who had a major crash morally. Almost 100 percent admitted that they didn’t have any real accountability or truth-tellers in their lives. We need someone to help probe areas that we need to develop. Third, it helps us sharpen and develop to be the best we can be for God. God uses people to help grow us. “Iron sharpens iron” (Proverbs 27:17).
In the Church of God, many of our leaders have come to value greatly the difference that coaching can make in their life and leadership. Whether it is coaching for a congregation seeking to go to the next level; or a pastor seeking to push past some lids in their leadership skills; or individuals who have felt the call of God to respond to ministry and mission, coaching has become an essential part of the way we accomplish these goals. For anyone wanting to improve their skills or reach goals that are significant, coaching is a significant part of how that happens.
Whether you are wanting to increase your own leadership or learn how to coach others in fulfilling their goals, we want to invite you to participate in a day of “coach training for impact.” The theme of our international Church of God Convention and General Assembly this year is Breathe Life. Speak Life. Give Life. One of the most effective ways of fulfilling that theme is to become part of the strong and growing coaching culture that is rising up in the Church of God.
We have set aside June 26 from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM to focus singularly on developing the skills to “coach for impact.” This pre-conference event will take place at the World Center Marriot in Orlando. The cost for this event is only $50, which covers lunch and materials for the day.
If you would like to be a part of coaching congregations, pastors, Leadership Focus, LifeGiver Cells; or other coaching opportunities, this training day is specifically for you. There are a number of requests for trained and equipped coaches, so we are providing this day as a means of identifying and preparing pastors and lay leaders who are willing to be part of the coaching culture in the Church of God. Would you pray about this opportunity and make every effort to be part of this major event that will make a great kingdom impact?
